I was pleasantly surprised at Puerto Rico, and very much regretted not having gone sooner. Like most people, after visiting couple of islands in the Carribbean, I had reached a conclusion that they are all pretty much the same. Of course, the cultures are different, but the overall poverty outside the resorts, the security/safety issues, and the high level of interest in tourists sometimes get overwhelming. Personally, I always look for a little bit more than nice weather, palm trees and the beach when I go to sunny places. To my surprise, Puerto Rico has those and so much more to offer. It is a fairly large island with great diversity - for example how many people know that Puerto Rico has a rain forest? Actually, it is the only rain forest within the national park system in the US. Other than that, the island is easily navigable by car (as long as you can find the signs - one of the signs for the rain forest was hiding behind a tree), highways are safe, well-lit, and clean, most roads are in good order, and people seem to be helpful but leave the tourists alone. And of course, there is Old San Juan... the mix of Spanish culture, architecure and overall influence in lifestyle, cobblestone streets, pretty and colorful houses, narrow alleys, wonderful views, and people who go along with life...
I highly recommend a visit to Puerto Rico, and here are the top reasons why you should go:
- If you are going from the US, there are no passport checks or customs, it is the same as going to Florida.
- You can still use the US $, 800-numbers, and most of the systems from the US (measurements are in miles, they drive on the right, and the signs etc. are familiar)
- You can get a "European feel" - just stroll the streets of Old San Juan
- You can walk through history - safely. This is one of the oldest inhabited islands in the Caribbean even though there isn't much left from the original tribes. Think, they have a monument for 500 years of being discovered
- The island's diversity - beaches, palm trees, rain forest, world's largest radio-telescope, 2 islands with even quieter beaches and relaxation
- Safety: Overall you can be an independent traveler on the island without any issues. Of course you need to take precaution and use common sense, but renting a car and going around the island is not an issue. Same with walking the streets of Old San Juan, even at night.
- Access: most major cities in the US have non-stop flights to Puerto Rico which makes it a reachable destination without spending the whole day on planes and at airports, and if you are on the East Coast, you don't have to worry about time zones.

So, I'd say... the first opportunity you get, go to Puerto Rico. And if you don't get an opportunity, create one!
